Experience

What Is Dialogue in the Dark?

Dialogue in the Dark is an exhibition without light – literally. Visitors move through a series of reconstructed everyday settings in complete darkness, in groups of up to 8 people: a market square, a park, a boat trip on Hamburg Harbour, a café. The guides leading visitors through the darkness are blind or severely visually impaired – they are in their element; the sighted visitors are not.

The exhibition was created in 1989 by social scientist Andreas Heinecke in Frankfurt and has since been shown in more than 40 countries. The original in Hamburg is regarded as one of the most significant permanent exhibitions in Germany. Over 9 million people worldwide have experienced it.

The Effect: Perception Beyond Seeing

Something unexpected happens in the dark: hearing, touch, smell and taste sharpen dramatically. The sound of wind in a reconstructed park, the smell of fresh baked goods at the market, the texture of the ground beneath your feet – everything normally overlaid by visual perception moves to the foreground.

Most visitors report that the experience permanently changes their perception of their surroundings – and conveys a fundamentally different understanding of disability and the daily lives of blind people than any statistic or awareness campaign could. This makes Dialogue in the Dark a rare example of an exhibition that actually changes something.

The Guides: Expertise in the Dark

The blind and visually impaired guides are not performers but experts. They know the exhibition better than any other space – through experience, not memory. The encounter with them, while you yourself navigate through the darkness by touch and sound, is the true core of the experience. This asymmetry – the sighted visitors helpless, the blind guides entirely in command – is not a staged effect but lived reality.

Hamburg as a Setting

Dialogue in the Dark is located in Hamburg's Speicherstadt – Germany's largest coherent ensemble of brick warehouse buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. The district, built from 1885 to 1927 as a free port warehouse complex and now home to creative businesses, museums and restaurants, is itself a fascinating place. We frame the exhibition experience within a private Hamburg programme: harbour tour, Speicherstadt walk, dinner with an Elbe view, optionally a concert at the Elbphilharmonie.

Hamburg: More Than Harbour and Fish Market

Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and a cultural heavyweight that tourism often underestimates. The Kunsthalle (one of Germany's most important art collections), the Museum of Hamburg History, the Deichtorhallen for contemporary art, and the Miniatur Wunderland (for other reasons entirely) all lie within easy reach. We shape your Hamburg programme according to your interests and time.
