Berlin: Three Dictatorships in One City
No other city in the world experienced three separate dictatorships in the 20th century – and preserved their traces within a single urban landscape. Berlin was the capital of the German Empire, seat of government of the Weimar Republic, capital of the Third Reich, and then divided – with East Berlin as the capital of the GDR and West Berlin as a frontline city of the West. This layering makes Berlin an unparalleled place for understanding history.
The Government Quarter: History and Present
The Brandenburg Gate – built in 1791 as a Prussian city gate, symbol of division during the Cold War, now emblem of reunification – stands at the heart of the government quarter. A few minutes' walk away: the Holocaust Memorial (2,711 concrete stelae by architect Peter Eisenman), the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Beneath it, in an underground information centre, the fates of families exterminated by the Nazi regime are documented.
The Reichstag, completed in 1894 and damaged by fire in 1933 (which was used as a pretext to enact the Enabling Act), has housed the German Bundestag since 1999 beneath Norman Foster's glass dome. Access to the dome is free – and offers a 360-degree view over Berlin that explains the city's structure from above.
Checkpoint Charlie and Bernauer Strasse
Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse was the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin – primarily for foreigners and diplomats. The famous confrontation between American and Soviet tanks in October 1961, just months after the Wall was built, took place at precisely this spot. The building is now a museum; the staging with actors in period uniforms and tourist photos contrasts sharply with the actual history of the place.
The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse shows what the Wall actually looked like: not a simple concrete strip, but a 100-metre death strip with a rear wall, floodlighting, dog runs, watchtowers and a control strip. 140 people lost their lives attempting to cross the Wall – the first on 22 August 1961, one day after construction began.
Museum Island and the Historic Centre
Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, is a unique ensemble of five world-class museums on a river island in the Spree: the Pergamon Museum, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Bodemuseum, and the Alte Nationalgalerie. The Pergamon Museum houses the reconstructed Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon – both originals, whose sheer scale astonishes every visitor.
Understanding Berlin: Finding the Right Pace
Ticking off Berlin in a single day is possible – but ultimately meaningless. The city requires time, feet and curiosity. Our private tour shapes the route and pace around your interests: those who want to go deeper into Nazi history focus on the Topography of Terror, the Holocaust Memorial and the Reichstag. Those who want to understand the division choose the Wall Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie and the GDR Museum. We bring both together – with the space that history deserves.
