The Beginning: Hamburg, Berlin and the Steering Wheel

It all started with a limousine service. For years I worked as a chauffeur in Hamburg and Berlin – for business travellers, delegations, and people who experienced Germany from the back seat of a black car. You learn a great deal when you drive: the streets, the neighbourhoods, the stories behind the buildings. And you learn how differently people travel – what interests them, what moves them, what they want to remember.

I eventually knew Hamburg as well as my own home: the HafenCity before it was finished, the Speicherstadt at dawn, the Landungsbrücken when the first ferries dock. Berlin was different – rougher, more complex, with a history pressing out of every corner. Checkpoint Charlie, the Bernauer Strasse Memorial, the Stasi headquarters in Lichtenberg: as a driver you pass them by. At some point, I wanted to understand what lay behind them.

What began as professional curiosity became a passion. The Nazi era, the GDR, post-war history, reunification: Germany has a history that cannot be read from the surface. Behind every well-known site lies a complexity that guidebooks rarely convey. The Eagle's Nest is not simply a viewpoint – it is the story of a regime that moved mountains to stage itself. Prora is not simply a crumbling concrete structure – it is 4.5 kilometres of condensed ideology that never welcomed a single guest.

I wanted to make this depth accessible. Not as a lecture, not as a school lesson – but as what good travel is: an experience you understand because you were there.
